Custody in UK law
The family courts in England and Wales no longer use the words 'custody' and 'access'. Understanding the current terms helps you ask for the right order.
What used to be called custody or residence is now set out in a Child Arrangements Order stating who your child lives with. This can be shared between both parents.
What used to be called access or contact is now described as time your child spends with you, including overnight stays, holidays and indirect contact.
Separate from where your child lives, parental responsibility gives you a say in major decisions about schooling, health and upbringing.
Shared arrangements
Every arrangement is built around what is best for your child, but these are the issues most fathers want settled.
